When Last Token Gaming was established two years ago, one of my first hopes was to spotlight the history of video games in various ways. Aside from my obvious inclination from being a history major and writer, a crucial motivation behind this was just how underrated and largely untold the stories of the growth of gaming really are. One reason a lot of fascinating gaming history isn’t always told is probably because, in addition to games still being a relatively young medium, we understandably put all our focus on consuming and experiencing games, and understandably so. Still, given all the hard work, love and innovation that goes into bringing a game to life, it’s important to chronicle the names and stories for posterity and recognition.

Luckily, it seems we’re in the midst of a video game history documentary boom in 2015. In addition to the superb World 1-1 exploring Atari and the nascent days of the industry, a successful Kickstarter campaign for a documentary about one of the foundations of gaming in the 90’s has just completed. (Launched by developer Josh Tsui, it’s raised $92,181 with 1,316 backers as of this writing.) Entitled Inside Coin: Inside Midway’s 90’s Revolution, the film will explore the untold story of how Midway jolted arcades with an explosive lineup of games like Mortal Kombat, NBA Jam, Narc, Wrestlemania, and Terminator 2: Judgment Day. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg of the studio’s high times in the 90’s, as evidenced by this trailer:

If that doesn’t get you amped up for the completed product, then you’ve either never stepped into any sort of an arcade in your entire waking breathing existence, or you somehow lost all conscious while watching it. While Insert Coin has more than sufficiently met its funding goal, it’s still important to raise awareness about it to garner as wide an audience as possible for when it’s released. To say the least, myself and the rest of the LTG staff eagerly await it.
