Everyone here at Last Token Gaming has been working hard on completing their Comic-Con Press Pass Applications to get them in on time! Wish us luck as we send those applications in for review. Due to this, we’re running a little light on the material we have for this week. However, we couldn’t just leave you all empty handed, right? Here’s our 8th, aka Post-Comic Con Application Edition of “What We’re Playing This Week!” Enjoy!

Isaac: While I’m working my way through some old school titles like Recettear: An Item Shop’s Tale and Pokémon: Emerald, I’ve picked up two new indie games that are polar opposites, yet both fantastic games.

Crypt of the Necrodancer is a gorgeous pixel art roguelike by Brace Yourself games. It’s procedurally generated, has treasure upgrades (and doesn’t tell you what they do, true to the original Rogue), and is brutally unforgiving. The icing on the cake? It’s also a rhythm game. You dance gracefully across levels to killer chiptune-esque music (which gets faster with each level), and have to move in the correct patterns to vanquish equally rhythmic foes! It tickles my roguelike fancy equally as much as my music fancy. I love it.

This War of Mine is the other title I’ve picked up. I haven’t explored it in any great depth, but I know already that it’s going to be a powerful addition to the indie game repertoire. The art style is beautiful, realistic and desolate. The gameplay reminds me a lot of zombie survival/resource management games, but it doesn’t allow you the convenient disconnect from reality that zombie games provide; your situation is happening to real people, and real people are both your allies and your enemies. It brings home the brutality of war, and when I finally feel like I understand enough of the game to write a review, I imagine its emotional impact will rival that of Papers, Please and its brethren. Wow.

As an aside, I’ve also picked up a PS4 with Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls. Let me tell you, that game sits incredibly well on console, and with couch co-op, it’s a rare gem of cooperative multiplayer in the wasteland of next-gen consoles.

Terry: After beating Never Alone and Game of Thrones: Iron from Ice Ep. 1,I’m finally edging my way through Pokemon Omega Ruby, as well as Alien: Isolation and both Kingdom Hearts 1.5 and 2.5 HD for a HOF video/article review. I’ll also be streaming some more Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U on Thursday and start streaming every Tues-Thurs.

Brett: I’ve been playing Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP, League of Legends (as always), and I’ve started checking out Dead Island Epidemic, a new moba styled Dead Island game.

Mike M: After a week of planning and a weekend of wedding festivities, I finally had a little time to sit down and game. I started playing some Playstation imports, Night Striker and Samurai Shodown : Warrior’s Rage 2. Night Striker is a frantic shooter on rails similar to Super Thunder Blade, Afterburner and Space Harrier. Highly reccomended! Warrior’s Rage 2….not so much. This falls into the category of “It’s not bad, it’s just so different from the other games in the series.” Samurai Shodown is such a unique series, so to turn it 3D and take out all recognizable characters is a bit of a head scratcher. I leave tomorrow morning for our honeymoon in Florida, so we’re in for a long flight. I’ll be bringing along my PSP with 2 Capcom Classics Collection’s, SNK Arcade Classics, a Snatch UMD & a game I’ve never played, Final Fantasy VII : Crisis Core. What better way to kill a long flight than by grinding away in an RPG?

Jake: After playing Game of Thrones: Iron from Ice Ep. 1, I’m going to grind away at Pokemon Omega Ruby for a review. Between plans that I have off the side, that’s all I’ll play for now.
